First 'Hillbillies,' now 'Acres' to get real
HOLLYWOOD, California (Reuters) -- Days after news broke that CBS was planning a reality-series revival of "The Beverly Hillbillies," Fox Broadcasting said it is developing a nonfiction comedy that mirrors another rural comedy: "Green Acres," Variety reports.
While details are still being hammered out, the show will take a rich, upper-class family or individual -- possibly a celebrity -- and move them from a big city to a much more spartan existence, most likely in the South. Cameras will observe as the former socialites, deprived of access to their bank accounts and Beemers, attempt to get a job, buy groceries and fit in with average Americans.

Pranksters — not aliens — are likely to blame for crop circles that appeared in an Eaton County cornfield this week, local officials said.
Eaton County Sheriff Rick Jones said the circles are similar to those in the hit movie "Signs," where aliens create massive geometric markings in a cornfield.
One circle is almost 100 feet wide. There are no tire tracks, the corn was simply bent. Jones said less than an acre of corn had been damaged.
"Farmers can lose large amounts of a crop due to such nonsense," he told the Lansing State Journal for Thursday's editions. "I realize it's been a No. 1 movie ... but destruction of property is a crime."
Anyone caught damaging a field could face up to 90 days in jail and would have to pay for the lost crops, Jones said.
It's the second time this month that crop circles have appeared in Eaton County fields, he said.

NORWALK, Conn. (AP) - Kennedy cousin Michael Skakel was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison Thursday for bludgeoning a teenage neighbor to death with a golf club 27 years ago.
Skakel wept as he testified for the first time Thursday and insisted he was innocent in the death of Martha Moxley.
"I would love to be able to say I did the crime so that the Moxley family could have rest and peace," he said, sobbing. "But to do that would be a lie."
Skakel, 41, a nephew of Ethel Kennedy, was convicted of murder in June for Moxley's slaying, which occurred in their gated Greenwich neighborhood of Belle Haven when they were both 15.
Her battered body was discovered on Oct. 31, 1975, under a tree on her family's estate, next door to the Skakels. She had been bludgeoned with a golf club — later traced to a set owned by Skakel's mother — and stabbed in the neck with the shaft of the club.
"For the last 25 years or more ... the defendant has been living a lie about his guilt," Judge John Kavanewsky Jr. said in sentencing Skakel. "This defendant has accepted no responsibility, he has expressed no personal remorse."
Prosecutor Jonathan Benedict called the slaying "cold-bloodedly evil."

Lance Bass, of the pop group *NSYNC ( news - web sites), showed up at the Johnson Space Center in Houston this week to begin a week of training for a flight to the international space station ( news - web sites) scheduled for October.
Unlike previous space tourists, however, the 23-year-old singer isn't paying. He's gotten corporate sponsors, including MTV and Radio Shack, to pick up the $20 million tab. In return, Bass will film commercials in space for products he totes aboard and provide material for a TV series about his adventure. "It's the total, complete commercialization of space," says his promoter, David Krief, "but done with class and integrity."
Could have fooled us.
Actually, America's space team is doing a favor for the folks in Moscow by training Bass - without the week in Houston, he can't be cleared to fly. But why is NASA helping him? It's not as if Lance Bass actually brings anything to the mission. If the Russians want to sell their space program to the highest bidder, fine - that's their choice. But NASA should make it clear that shooting dewy-eyed pop stars into space serves no interests other than the star's, and his sponsors.
In fact, it's hard to think of a better way to trivialize the entire space program.
"Space can be very unforgiving if there's a mistake that's made," says flight director John Curry in defense of the singer's Houston training.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Up from CBS comes a-bubblin' crude, with the network developing a reality series based on the old "The Beverly Hillbillies" sitcom.
CBS is planning to cast a weekly half-hour series that will chronicle the lives of a rural, lower-middle class family as they move into a luxurious Beverly Hills mansion.
The project is tentatively titled, "Real Beverly Hillbillies," the trade newspaper Variety reported Wednesday.
A maid and personal assistants will be among the indulgences afforded to the family during a one-year stay in California. Participants also will be able to earn money each week as part of the contest.
"The intent is to be respective but at the same time enjoy the humor that comes from the fish-out-of-water scenario of the show," said Ghen Maynard, a CBS alternative programming executive. "We want a family who has a sense of humor about themselves."
Is it another sign of the end time? Oh the Humanity!

WACO, Texas (Reuters) - A fraternity at Baptist-run Baylor University has been suspended for a year after its members posed for Playboy magazine, even though everyone in the picture was fully clothed, a school spokesman said on Wednesday.
The students -- about 50 members of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and four women -- were found to be in violation of the school's sexual misconduct policy, spokesman Larry Brumley said.
The students posed on a volleyball court for the photograph, which was published in the October issue.
Playboy spokeswoman Elizabeth Norris said the magazine was dismayed. "I'm sure if you ask all the guys, in their heart of hearts they were thrilled to be in the magazine," she said. "You have to wonder what kind of education they're (Baylor) giving students."
