Wrestler Admits Kaufman Feud Was Fake - Thu, Dec 26, 2002 05:55 PM PDT

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Twenty years after the fact, professional wrestler Jerry Lawler is coming clean about his supposed feud with comedian Andy Kaufman.

Kaufman, who decided to try his hand at wrestling at one point in his career and took on all comers, including women, met Lawler in Memphis. In 1982, the bickering duo appeared together on David Letterman's late night show and erupted when Lawler slapped Kaufman, who retaliated by throwing coffee at him.

While Letterman was not in on the joke, Lawler asserts in his new book "It's Good to Be the King ... Sometimes" that he and Kaufman staged the whole incident.

Kaufman died in 1984.
